The Lowdown

Alright, let me break it down for you. This is Praia de Asturias – a beach and reef setup that’s sheltered, mostly for beginners, and it’s inconsistent. The water’s sitting at 67°F with a tiny anomaly of -1°F, so pretty much normal for this time of year. No big surprises there.

The next couple of weeks are mostly a flat spell. From Friday 17 July right through to the end of July, it’s tiny – knee to waist high at best, with a lot of onshore or cross-onshore junk and very ordinary conditions. The combined energy stays under 200 (weak) most days, and the scores are just not there. There’s a few mornings where it’s clean but the swell is too small to get excited about. You’ll be staring at a lot of closeouts and wind ripples.

The first real glimmer shows up on Saturday 25 July morning – glassy with 3ft of S swell, but the energy is only 150 (weak) and the period is short, 8 seconds. It’s surfable but nothing special. Then on Tuesday 28 July morning, the swell bumps to 6ft from the S, period 8 seconds, energy hits 534 (moderate). The wind is cross-off from the W at 9 mph, so it’ll be clean. That’s a solid head-high option, but with that short period, it’s gonna be a bit crumbly at the beach. It’s more of a power session for beginners who don’t mind a bit of chop.

But the real standout is Friday 31 July afternoon. The swell drops to 5ft from the SE, but the period lengthens to 13 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell. Combined energy is 755 (strong). And the wind? Glassy – zero knots from the E. That’s going to be clean, lined-up waves, especially on the reef sections. The optimum direction for this spot is E, and SE is close enough, so it should work. This is the best of the run, hands down. Then Saturday 1 August morning keeps it going: 4ft from the SE, 13 seconds again, glassy from the NNE at 3 mph, energy 612 (strong). Another morning of clean, long-period waves. Expect longer lulls between sets, but the shape and power will be there. Crowds are sometimes an issue, so if you’re there early, you’ll get it.

Before that, there’s a long gap of nothing worth paddling out for. The period from 17 July to 24 July is mostly tiny and messy. Then 25–27 July has some clean moments but the swell is small. The good stuff only kicks in from 28 July morning, but even then, the afternoon gets blown out. The 31 July afternoon and 1 August morning are the ones to circle.

If you’re a beginner, the 5ft to 6ft range is fine – not too big. The 6ft on 28 July is a bit more push, but still manageable. The glassy winds on 31 July and 1 August make it a dream for anyone.

Stay stoked, and remember – a long period swell like this loves the reef and points, so be ready for the set waves.
