Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the Asturias stretch over the next couple of weeks. The water’s sitting at a pretty pleasant 70°F right now, which is right on the money for this time of year, so no wetsuit drama down at Praia de Asturias.
Right off the bat, Friday the 3rd is a non-starter. It’s small and messy, cross-shore wind and weak energy (92). We’re looking at a bit of a wait for anything worth paddling out for.
Saturday the 4th has a bit more push—4ft to 5ft from the south, but it’s cross-on with wind ripples, and the energy is moderate (up to 650). The scoring says it’s marginal, so save your energy.
Sunday the 5th is where it gets interesting. That morning session is the standout for the early part of the week. It’s glassy, dead calm winds, with a solid 4ft south swell running at a long 12 seconds (groundswell). The energy is moderate (480). That’s clean, lined-up surf for the beach and reef setup. Keep in mind this spot is sheltered and inconsistent, so it doesn’t pump every day—but when it’s this clean, you get on it. Crowds can show up though, so be early. The swell direction is south, and while the optimum here is east, that glassy surface will make a lot of things work.
Monday the 6th still has some life with a 3ft swell and glassy conditions in the morning—surfable but ordinary, not a standout.
After that, we hit a long dry spell. From Tuesday the 7th right through to Thursday the 16th, it’s mostly small, weak, and plagued by cross or onshore winds. There are a few glassy windows (like the 8th, 9th, 10th mornings) but the swell is tiny—1ft to 3ft—and energy drops to the low 100s or even below 100. It’s the kind of stretch where you could get wet but it’s not worth writing home about.
Then, finally, a light at the end of the tunnel. Saturday the 18th—that’s over a week away, so treat it as promising but not locked in—looks like another clean morning. Glassy again, with a 3ft south swell but a very long 17-second period. The energy jumps back up to 476 (moderate). That long period will give you proper groundswell lines, and at a beach-and-reef setup like this, it could offer some nice, open face waves if the tide plays ball. It’s small but clean, so that’s your long-range one to watch.
All in all, Sunday the 5th morning is your best bet right now: clean, waist-high groundswell, light offshore wind. The rest of the fortnight is mostly a waiting game, with a hopeful eye on the 18th.
Rusty, signing off.
