The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s in store for Balneario Novo Quintao.
Honestly, the first half of this 16-day stretch is a bit of a slog. We’ve got a lot of days where the wind is just messy, and the surf is either too small or too choppy to get excited about. It’s a real test of patience.
The one day that really stands out, the one you need to circle, is Monday, July 20th. In the afternoon, the wind goes completely glassy—dead calm. We’ll have a solid 7ft swell coming from the ENE. The combined energy is a solid 839 (moderate wave energy), which is a huge step up from the weak stuff we’ve been dealing with. The glassy conditions will make for some of the cleanest waves you’ll see all window. It’s not a monster swell, but it’s got enough power for a proper session. Beginners might find 7ft a bit intimidating, but for intermediate and up, this is the best on offer.
The other potential highlight is further out, on Wednesday, July 29th. After another week of onshore junk, we finally get a clean offshore breeze from the W in the afternoon. The swell is 6ft from the ENE, with an energy of 442 (moderate). It’s a long-range call, so don’t bet the farm on it, but that offshore wind will make it a whole lot better than most of what we’ve seen.
For the rest of it, it’s a grind. The first week has a lot of days with small swell (3ft to 6ft) and cross-shore or onshore winds. The morning of Thursday, July 16th has a 4ft swell with a light cross-shore, but it’s a marginal call. The 19th of July Sunday morning has a clean cross-offshore wind from the NW, but the swell is only 5ft and the energy is weak (366). It’s clean, but not substantial.
The 24th of July Friday morning brings a clean offshore wind from the W with a 3ft swell (217 energy). It’s a small, clean day for a longboard.
The 25th of July Saturday morning is a weird one. A 5ft groundswell from the SSE with a 14-second period. The energy is a massive 1136 (strong wave energy), but it’s described as marginal. That long period swell can be tricky on a beach break, making it too fast and straight. It’s an expert-only kind of day, and it’s not the cleanest option.
The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual to report.
So, the bottom line: the first week is mostly a waste. The absolute best session is the afternoon of Monday, July 20th—glassy, 7ft, and clean. That’s your target. The 29th of July is a promising backup, but it’s a long way out. Don’t waste your energy on the rest.
Rusty.
