The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Balneario Novo Quintao over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you, it’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there are a couple of windows where it could get interesting.
The forecast starts off pretty rough. The first few days, from Friday 17th through to Monday 20th, are mostly a write-off. We’ve got a fresh cross-onshore wind and a lumpy, choppy mess with swell around 4ft to 7ft, but the conditions are just too poor to get excited about. The wave energy is moderate to strong, hitting 574 to 1194 on the 17th and 18th, but it's all wasted with that wind. The water temp is a chilly 58°F, which is 4°F colder than usual for this time of year – noticeably colder than normal.
Then we get a little reprieve. On Tuesday 21st, the wind switches to a light cross-offshore breeze, and the surf cleans right up. Swell drops to 3ft from the east, with a period of 9 seconds. The wave energy is weak to moderate (265-311). This is a small but clean session, best for the beginners out there on a longboard or a foamie. The conditions are good, but the surf is small.
The mid-week, from Wednesday 22nd through the weekend of the 26th, is a mix of cross-onshore winds and choppy surf, with a couple of brighter spots. Keep an eye on Saturday 25th afternoon. The swell is only 4ft from the SSE, but the period jumps to 12 seconds, making it a proper groundswell. The energy is moderate (578), and the wind is light cross-onshore. It’s marginal, but that longer period could produce some cleaner lines if the tide plays nice.
Now, the real standout window looks like the end of the forecast. Tuesday 28th July is a gem. In the morning, we get a glassy, flat-calm session with a 3ft swell from the SSE at a very long 12 seconds. The energy is moderate (298). This is ideal for a point break or a reef, but at a beach break, that long period might make it a bit straight. Still, glassy conditions are not to be sniffed at. Then, on Wednesday 29th July, the swell picks up to 6ft from the SSE, with a very long period of 13 seconds in the morning. The wave energy is strong (1087), and the wind is a clean, cross-offshore breeze. This is the biggest and cleanest swell of the whole forecast. At 6ft, it’s manageable for most intermediates, but the power will be there. This is the one to aim for.
The very end of the run, from the 30th July into August, looks like it turns back to onshore mush, so don’t get your hopes up for the first week of August.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a lot of waiting. The best bet is the clean, glassy conditions on Tuesday 28th July, and the standout is the stronger, cleaner swell on Wednesday 29th July. Mark it in your calendar.
Rusty.
