The Lowdown
Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Balneario Sao Jose has cooking for the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow start, but there are a couple of windows that’ll get the heart going.
The first few days are a write-off with tiny, weak 2ft to 2ft easterly windswell and onshore winds. You’re looking at flat, bumpy conditions with combined wave energy barely hitting 75. Not worth paddling out for.
Things start to stir late Friday the 21st when a solid south swell pushes in. By Saturday morning the 22nd, we’ve got 5ft of south swell with a decent 10-second period, and the wind is straight onshore. The energy is already climbing into the moderate range (570). The waves are there, but the wind is spoiling the party. This marginal trend continues into Sunday the 23rd, with dropping swell and onshore winds.
Now, Monday the 24th is a real turning point, but for different reasons. We get a powerful pulse of 7ft to 7ft swell from the SSE with a long 14 to 15-second period. The combined wave energy jumps into the strong zone (1822). This is proper groundswell. However, the wind is cross-onshore and there’s light rain. That kind of size with a long period on a beach/pier break like this can be fat and straight, making it tricky. This one is for experts only, and the conditions will be pretty choppy.
The standout session without a doubt is Tuesday the 25th. Both morning and afternoon are absolute perfection. The morning sees 6ft of clean, long-period south swell (14 seconds) with a light offshore cross-wind from the NE. The combined energy is still strong (1391), but the wind state is clean. The afternoon is the crown jewel: the wind goes completely glassy from the SW, with waves still at a solid 5ft and 14-second period. The energy dips a bit (1037) but the quality is rated excellent for experienced surfers. This is the day to be in the water. The water temp anomaly isn’t mentioned, so call it about average for late August.
After Tuesday, the swell slowly fades. Wednesday the 26th morning is still very good with 4ft and glassy conditions, but the wind swings cross-onshore by the afternoon, shortening the session. Thursday the 27th stays marginal as the swell drops and the wind stays messy.
Into the second week, things get quiet. From Friday the 28th onwards, we’re left with small fading swell (3ft down to 1ft) and low energy. The 29th and 30th have some glassy and offshore mornings with tiny 1ft to 2ft waves – maybe a longboard cruise if you’re desperate. There’s a solid gap of small, poor surf all the way through to the end of August.
We then hit a dark patch from Monday the 31st right through to Tuesday the 1st of September with nothing but onshore winds and weak east swell (2ft to 2ft, energy around 55 to 132). The wind is 9 mph onshore – total washout.
Then, a surprise: Wednesday the 2nd of September sees another spike of size – 7ft south swell with a shorter 9-second period and strong energy (1309). But that SSE wind stays cross-onshore at 9 mph, making it a choppy, sloppy affair. If you’re a strong paddle, there’s power there, but the quality is marginal.
Finally, Thursday the 3rd of September brings a glimmer of hope. The morning sees clean 6ft swell from the SE with 7-second period and glassy conditions from the SW. The energy drops back to moderate (364), but a clean 6ft with no wind is a decent way to cap off the forecast period.
The clear standout is Tuesday the 25th afternoon – glassy, solid south swell with plenty of push.
Rusty.
