The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, checkin’ in with the local outlook for Balneario Sao Jose.
First up, the water temp is sittin’ at 66°, which is a bit colder than what we’re used to this time of year. That’s the price we pay for a little winter bite.
The next week or so is pretty quiet. We’ve got a long stretch of small, workable waves from the 17th all the way through to the 26th of July, but honestly, nothing’s gonna get your heart poundin’. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3 ft, with weak energy readings (around 82 to 211). The wind is mostly light and offshore or cross-offshore, which will keep the surface clean, but the waves just don’t have the push. Saturday morning the 18th looks the pick of this early bunch with a clean 3 ft leftover swell from the ESE and a light offshore N wind, but it’s still a pretty small affair.
Then we hit a bit of a lull from the 22nd to the 24th, with some poor surf and questionable conditions. The 23rd and 24th have some glassy moments, but the swell is weak and pretty much onshore.
The real story starts to build late in the month. Sunday the 27th of July morning cleans up with a glassy 3 ft swell from the S, but the energy is ramping up (255). Then, Monday the 28th of July morning is a genuine standout. The swell is 3 ft from the SSE, but the period jumps to 14 seconds, with a massive energy reading of 423. It’s glassy, clean, and that long-period groundswell will have some real shape. This is a classic point-break or reef wave, so keep that in mind.
The best of the whole run, though, is Thursday the 30th of July morning. The swell kicks up to 7 ft from the SSE, with a massive energy reading of 1051. It’s glassy, and the conditions are flagged as excellent for experienced surfers. That’s a solid, powerful wave with good wind. This one is for the guys who know what they’re doing. The morning of the 1st of August is another clean, chunky option with 6 ft from the ESE and glassy conditions, but it won’t quite have the same grunt as the 30th.
For the best session, I’m callin’ Thursday the 30th of July morning. That’s the one to circle. The 27th is a close second for a cleaner, smaller day.
Rusty, out.
