The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, checking in with the look ahead for our local stretch. Things have been a bit flat and messy, but there’s a real pulse of swell coming through next week that’s got my attention. Let’s get into it.
The first real action is on Saturday, August 22nd afternoon. It’s not setting the world on fire – we’re looking at a 5ft south swell with a 10-second period. The wind is onshore from the SE at 6 mph, so it’s a bit bumpy. The combined energy is sitting at a moderate 471. It’s a slow start, but it’s a start.
Sunday the 23rd is still in that holding pattern. South swell drops to 4ft, period stays at 10 seconds, and the wind stays cross-onshore. Not one to get too excited about.
Now, Monday, August 24th morning, we see the energy jump. The swell bumps up to 7ft from the SSE, with a period stretching to 14 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, and the combined energy rockets to 1633. The wind is still cross-onshore from the ESE at 6 mph, so it’s gonna be a bumpy ride, but there’s plenty of push. This one’s for the experienced crew only – 7ft with that period is a lot of water moving.
The standout window kicks off on Tuesday, August 25th morning. The swell drops slightly to 5ft, but the direction hangs in from the south, period is a solid 14 seconds, and the magic happens with the wind. It goes glassy, absolutely dead calm, with a light easterly breeze at 3 mph. The combined energy is a strong 960. This is prime time. The break is Balneario Sao Jose, a beach and pier setup, and it’s exposed to the south swell. The water is sitting at 70°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Expect clean, peeling lines. Crowds are often here, so get there early.
If you miss that, Wednesday, August 26th is the heavyweight session. Morning and afternoon both deliver 6ft from the SSE, with a very long period of 16 seconds. The wind is glassy – zero wind in the morning, and a light NNE breeze in the afternoon. Combined energy is massive at 1538 and 1354. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The sets will be big and powerful, with long lulls between them. This is a point-break style wave, and with that period, it’ll be lining up beautifully.
Thursday, August 27th morning keeps the quality high. 5ft SSE swell, 14-second period, and glassy southwest wind at 3 mph. Combined energy at 1104. Another excellent session for the experienced.
We get a bit of a change-up on Friday, August 28th morning. The swell drops to 6ft but switches to an east direction with a short 8-second period. The wind is glassy from the NNW at 3 mph. Combined energy is 827. It’s a call for the logs or a fun mid-length board. The short period means it’ll be a bit more sectiony, but it’ll be clean.
After that, the energy starts to fade. Saturday, August 29th and Sunday, August 30th see the swell dropping into the 3ft and below range, with weak energy. The wind stays clean or glassy, but the waves are small and ordinary. We hit a real flat spell from Sunday, August 30th all the way through to Tuesday, September 1st, with poor surf conditions and low energy readings.
Wednesday, September 2nd morning brings a surprise. A 4ft SSE swell at 9 seconds, but with a strong offshore NW wind at 16 mph. Combined energy is 228. The wind will be howling offshore, making for clean, blown-out faces. It’s small, but it’s rideable.
Thursday, September 3rd morning is similar: 3ft south swell, 9-second period, and a clean offshore NW breeze at 6 mph.
The last chance for a decent session comes on Friday, September 4th morning. The swell bumps back to 5ft from the south, with a 9-second period. The wind is a light cross-shore from the east at 3 mph. Combined energy is 535. It’s marginal, but there might be a few fun ones if you pick the right bank.
Saturday, September 5th morning is a glassy 4ft south swell, but it’s fading fast. After that, it’s back to flat and poor conditions.
For the best options, Wednesday, August 26th is the standout. Two sessions of 6ft SSE groundswell with a 16-second period, glassy conditions, and a combined energy over 1500. That’s a serious day for the experienced surfer. Tuesday, August 25th morning is the next best – a bit smaller at 5ft, but the glassy conditions and 14-second period will give you the best chance at a clean, uncrowded session if you get there early.
Rusty.
