The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's coming up for Balneario Sao Jose.

Right now, we're in a bit of a flat spell. The surf is poor, with a weak little 2ft easterly swell that's just not doing anything. The water is sitting at 70°, which feels a touch warmer than usual for this time of year — a nice bonus if you're having a swim, but not enough to get excited about for surfing.

Thursday the 21st of August brings a shift. We've got a new swell building from the south, and by Friday afternoon it hits 5ft, with a period of 7 seconds and a combined energy of 440 (moderate). The wind is straight onshore though, so expect messy, choppy conditions. Not worth paddling out for.

Over the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd, the south swell holds around 4ft to 5ft (moderate energy in the 270-530 range), but again, the wind is onshore or cross-onshore. It's a frustrating wait, with only marginal surf and rain showers on Sunday spoiling the vibe.

Now, here's where it gets interesting. Monday the 24th of August sees a serious pulse of long-period groundswell from the south. We're talking 7ft to 8ft at 14 seconds, and the combined energy jumps right up to 2636 (strong). That's a lot of power. This is a proper swell, but it's going to be big — over 7ft — so really one for experienced surfers only. The wind is a light cross-onshore, so it won't be perfect, but there's enough grunt in those lines to make it worth a look for the crew who know what they're doing.

The standout window, however, looks like Wednesday morning the 26th of August. The swell drops back to a cleaner 4ft from the south-southeast, but the period stretches to 13 seconds, keeping that groundswell quality. The wind is glassy — dead calm. The energy is still solid at 824 (moderate), but more importantly, the surface will be like a mirror. This is the best chance for clean, lined-up surf. It won't be huge, but it'll be fun and user-friendly.

That glassy morning on Wednesday the 26th is the real highlight for me. After that, we get a few more clean windows — like Friday morning the 28th, with another glassy start and a 4ft easterly swell (energy 475), but the period drops to 9 seconds, so it won't have the same grunt. Then on Saturday the 29th, we get a nice clean cross-offshore breeze and a 4ft easterly swell, which will be tidy but small. The 30th of August continues the small, clean trend with light offshores and 3-3ft swell.

The second week starts to look more average. By Sunday the 31st of August, the wind picks up strong from the southwest at 16 mph, making a mess of things. There's a spike of energy on Thursday the 3rd of September with 8ft south swell at 10 seconds (combined energy 2002 – strong), but it's heavy, lumpy, and cross-onshore — that's expert territory, and honestly, for this exposed beach, it looks like it might actually be better suited for kite surfing than a regular paddle.

The most promising long-range note is Friday the 4th of September. The swell drops to 5ft from the south, period 12 seconds, and the wind goes glassy by afternoon with a combined energy of 1055 (moderate-strong). The forecast says *excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers*, which is about as good as it gets in this outlook. That's the one to circle on the calendar for later in the run.

So, to wrap it up: right now is flat. The best call this side of the window is Wednesday morning the 26th of August for the clean, glassy walls. And the long-range standout that's worth hoping for is Friday afternoon the 4th of September — if the forecast holds, that could be a real gem.

Rusty.
