The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s in store for your local stretch – Figueira da Foz - Cabedelo. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, with a long quiet spell coming up, so we need to pick our moments carefully.
The first decent chance we get is this Sunday, the 23rd of August. The morning session is the only one worth a sniff. We’re looking at a clean 6ft swell from the W, with a solid 11-second period, giving it plenty of punch. The wind is a cross-offshore breeze from the SSE, which will keep the faces tidy. Combined energy is sitting at a solid 686 – a moderate level of wave energy. The water temp is 66°, which is about 2° cooler than average for this time of year, so nothing too unusual, just a little fresh. This is a beginner-friendly break, so the 6ft swell is well within range, though it might feel a bit more powerful with that longer period. The downside? The wind is up to 19 mph, which is a bit of a huff, but being cross-off it should still groom it nicely. Watch out for the occasional crowd, as this spot can get busy.
After Sunday morning, the forecast takes a real dive. Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are a write-off – strong onshore winds and lumpy, chopped-out conditions. The swell drops right off, and the energy fades away to nothing. We’re looking at a dead period from Monday afternoon all the way through to the end of the month. A few small, weak swells roll through, but nothing you’d want to paddle out for.
Now, if you’re an experienced surfer, keep your eyes on Friday the 28th of August. We’ve got a big pulse of swell coming in. The morning shows a 10ft groundswell from the WNW with a long 11-second period, and the combined energy absolutely rockets to 1983 – that’s strong wave energy. The wind is light from the NNW, cross-on, which is okay, but the main issue is the size. At 10ft, this is strictly for experts only. Too big for beginners, and even for intermediates, it’ll be a handful. The afternoon eases a touch to 8ft, but still a heavy session. This is the standout, but it’s a big one, and the tide and wind are favorable, so if you’re skilled and hungry, it could be a proper session.
The next real glimmer of hope comes on Saturday the 29th of August. The morning looks clean with a 6ft swell from the NW, a 10-second period, and a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNE. That’s the sweet spot. Combined energy is 636 – moderate. The wind is light, the waves are clean, and the size is good for all levels. This is likely your best bet of the whole outlook if the big Friday swell is too much. The afternoon turns choppy again, so make it a dawn patrol.
After that, the well runs dry again. From Sunday the 30th right through to the end of the forecast, it’s small, weak, and mostly onshore. There are a few mornings with a tiny pulse, but nothing that’ll get you out of bed. The energy values drop under 200, and the swell is below 3ft for days on end. A frustrating run for a spot that’s usually fairly consistent, but that’s the run of it.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is Saturday morning, the 29th of August, with clean, moderate surf and light winds. For the big-wave crew, Friday the 28th is the heavy-hitter, but it’s for experts only. Don’t waste your time on the week in between.
Stay sharp, and pick your window.
Rusty.
