The Lowdown
Alright, let's talk in feet and miles per hour. Rusty here.
Look, I’m not going to sugar-coat it – this forecast is a tough one. A long, flat stretch is ahead of us. The water temp is normal for the season, nothing to report there.
From now, Sunday August 23rd, all the way through to the end of the month, it’s dead. Tiny, useless bumps. On Tuesday the 25th, there’s a 1ft pulse from the NE with a period of just 2 seconds – that’s not a wave, that’s a ripple. Wednesday the 26th is the same story: a 1ft NE swell, period 4 seconds, combined energy of (5). It’s clean in the mornings, but there’s simply nothing to ride.
We head into September and it’s the same story. The first week is a write-off. The wind picks up, but it’s all cross or cross-on, and the swell is non-existent or junk. On Tuesday the 1st, we get a 1ft pulse from the NNE, period 3 seconds, energy (3) – not worth the drive. By Friday the 4th, the wind is howling from the south at 22 mph, but it’s all cross-shore and messy, with no swell. It’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one.
The one day that might offer a shred of hope is Sunday, September 6th. We finally see something: a 3ft swell from the north, period of 4 seconds, combined energy of (27). The wind in the morning is light cross-off from the SSW at 6 mph, so it’ll be clean. The period is short, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and sectiony, but at least there’s some push. Itapema - Norte is the spot – a beach and point setup that’s fairly exposed to the east. The optimum swell direction is from the east, so this north swell isn’t a perfect match, but it’s the best we’ve got all forecast. It’s consistent enough, so there should be a few waves to be had.
After that, Monday the 7th of September fades back to a tiny 0.7ft blip from the south. The window closes again.
So, if you’re itching for a surf, that Sunday the 6th at Itapema - Norte is your best and only real shot. It’s clean, it’s the biggest of the run, and it’s been a long dry spell. Get in the water while you can.
Stay salty.
Rusty.
