Lefthanders Water Temperature and Wetsuit Guide

(Margaret River, Australia)

Today's Lefthanders sea temperature is 20.5 °C

(Which is slightly warmer than usual)

Mean: 19.7 °C
Range: 18.8 °C to 21.6 °C
Statistics for 31 Dec (1981–2005)

Today, many surfers would wear a rashvest wetsuit.

Sunny with very warm air temperatures, feeling like 25 °C once we account for any wind. Sea temperatures (20 °C) warm too. Staying warm in the water won't be a problem in board-shorts, but wear at least a rash-vest to keep the UV off.

    Lefthanders Water Temperature Graph

All of the graphs for the surf breaks presented on Surf-Forecast.com are on the same scale to enable comparison between locations around the world.

Lefthanders sea water temperatures peak in the range 21 to 22°C (70 to 72°F) on around the 1st of March and are at their minimum on about the 8th of September, in the range 16 to 19°C (61 to 66°F). Lefthanders sea water temperatures are warmest at the beginning of March. Surfers should use a 2mm long sleeve shorty or a 3/2mm spring wetsuit if the wind is up. The minimum seasonal sea water temperatures at Lefthanders in early to mid September lend themselves to a 4/3mm wetsuit or a 3/2mm suit and 3mm neoprene boots.

Actual sea surface water temperatures close to shore at Lefthanders can vary by several degrees compared with these open water averages. This is especially true after heavy rain, close to river mouths or after long periods of strong offshore winds. Offshore winds cause colder deep water to replace surface water that has been warmed by the sun. Air temperature, wind-chill and sunshine should also be considered before deciding on the kind of wetsuit needed to stay warm when surfing at Lefthanders.
