The Lowdown

G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for Praia da Boraceia over the next couple of weeks.

We’ve got a slow start, but there’s some decent surf early on, then a real dry spell, before a much better window opens up right at the end. The water temp is about 68°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year – no surprises there.

The first real standout is Wednesday, 15 July morning. Praia da Boraceia will have about 5 ft swell out of the SE with a 10-second period, and the wind is a glassy 3 mph from the N. That’s clean, mate. The combined energy is moderate at 400, and conditions are glassy. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, fairly consistent, so you’ll get waves. Crowds are sometimes around, so expect a few others. The swell direction is close to the ideal SSE, so it’s working well.

Thursday morning, 16 July, is also worth a mention. Clean, 4 ft SE swell, 3 mph offshore wind from the N, and combined energy of 463. It’s glassy and clean – a solid session.

From there, the surf drops off quickly. By Friday afternoon, 17 July, the swell drops to 3 ft with a shorter 8-second period, and the wind goes cross-shore. Not great. From Saturday, 18 July, through to Wednesday, 22 July, we’re looking at weak, small waves – mostly under 3 ft, combined energy under 200, and often just ordinary. There’s a gap of about five days where the surf is pretty marginal.

The next real highlight comes much later. Tuesday, 28 July morning is a beauty. The swell picks up to 4 ft from the S, but the period jumps to a very long 13 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The wind is glassy from the E at 3 mph, and the combined energy jumps to 761 (strong). The forecast says “very good surf conditions.” This is a point break or reef dream, but at a beach break like Boraceia, that long period can make the waves break a bit straight. Still, with clean conditions, it’s a standout.

Wednesday, 29 July morning, also has 3 ft S swell at 12 seconds, with clean offshore NNE wind at 3 mph and combined energy of 553. Another solid option.

And then Thursday, 30 July morning – this is the big one. The swell is 7 ft from the E with an 8-second period, and the wind is completely calm, glassy. The combined energy is 803 (very strong). This is a proper size, clean, and looks like the best session of the whole window. At 7 ft, it’s pushing into expert territory, so beginners might want to sit this one out. The swell direction is E, not quite the ideal SSE, but with that energy and glass, it’s hard to complain.

After that, the swell drops off again, with a tiny 2 ft, 18-second period affair on the 30th afternoon – very long period, clean, but small.

So, the best on offer is Thursday, 30 July morning – big, clean, and powerful. The second best is Tuesday, 28 July morning for that long, clean groundswell. Everything else in the middle is a bit of a write-off.

Rusty.
