The Lowdown
Alright, I’ve got a look at what’s on offer for Praia da Boraceia over the next couple of weeks, and honestly, it’s pretty quiet for a good while. The swell window is open to the SSE, which will produce waves, but the first few days we’re talking small stuff and wind that isn’t doing us any favours. Wait it out.
From Thursday the 30th of July, all the way through that weekend, you’re looking at tiny surf, mostly around 2 ft, with a few cross-on breezes and very weak energy (58). Not worth paddling out. Friday the 31st morning goes glassy with a small SSE swell, 2 ft and combined energy up to 101, but that’s still only just surfable, and it's flat again by afternoon.
The first real highlight doesn't show until Saturday the 1st of August. Early morning we get a bump in size: 5 ft from the east, short period at 7 seconds, but clear skies and glassy wind. Combined energy hits 368 (moderate), and the wave comment says expect good surf conditions. That window Saturday morning is your best early bet, though crowds are sometimes an issue here. For beginners, 5 ft might be pushing it, but manageable. Afternoon gets cross-on and drops off.
Sunday the 2nd of August morning cleans up with an offshore NNW breeze and 3 ft from the ESE, but it’s ordinary – not worth getting too excited about. The following week is mostly small, with lots of poor conditions until Tuesday the 4th.
Now, August 8th – Saturday – here we go. The morning brings clean 4 ft from the SSE, period 9 seconds, a light offshore from the north, combined energy around 287, and the surf is expected to be good. This is a real standout for the first week. The afternoon goes glassy, same size, same solid energy. This is the day to clear the diary if you can.
Then we roll into the second week. There’s a long, flat run with lots of onshore wind and rain. But hold on… Wednesday the 12th of August looks interesting. The morning goes glassy, 3 ft from the SSE with a long period of 13 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 541 – that’s solid, powerful groundswell. For a spot like Praia da Boraceia, which is exposed, a longer period like that means better shaped waves, but at a beach break it can make things a bit straight. Still, with calm wind and glassy conditions, it’s a promising call, even though it’s a week and a half out, so keep an eye on the updates. The afternoon stays clean with 3 ft from the SSE and glassy wind.
Overall, the real winners here are Saturday morning August 1st for the size and glass, and Saturday August 8th for the clean 4 ft with offshore wind. The long range on Wednesday the 12th has some juice but it’s less certain. Expect a lot of waiting in between.
This is Rusty, signing off.
