The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s switch to feet and miles for the crew who think that way.

The first few days are tame. From Saturday the 18th through Wednesday the 22nd, it’s small, clean, but nothing special. Waves are 2 to 3 feet from the ESE with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is weak, between 65 and 136. Mornings have a light offshore breeze from the NNW, so it’s surfable but very ordinary.

Thursday the 23rd is similar, glassy but tiny. Friday the 24th morning brings a pulse: 4 feet from the S, 8 seconds, combined energy of 248. Clean early with a light cross-offshore wind, but rain and an onshore breeze mess up the afternoon. Still, Friday morning is the first decent session.

Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th are sloppy with onshore winds and rain. Not worth it.

Monday the 27th morning is glassy, calm, with a 2-foot south swell but a long 13-second period. Combined energy is 222 – moderate. Clean, but small. The real standout is Tuesday the 28th. That morning, we’ve got 5 feet from the east, 7-second period, combined energy of 365 – strong. And it’s glassy. No wind. That’s a solid, clean, punchy wave for the confident surfer. It’s getting into the “too big for beginners” range, but for anyone with experience, this is the best session of the window. The afternoon stays glassy with 5 feet and clean.

After that, Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th drop back to small and ordinary or choppy. Friday the 31st sees a bump to 5 feet from the SSE, but cross-onshore wind and rain keep it messy.

But the real reward is the weekend. Saturday the 1st of August is glassy in the morning with a 3-foot south swell, 11-second period, and a massive combined energy of 595 – very strong. That’s a beautiful, clean, long-period groundswell. Best at a point or reef, but with the glassy conditions, it’ll be a dream. Then Sunday the 2nd of August morning is the absolute pick: 6 feet from the SE, 10-second period, combined energy of 649 – very strong. And it’s offshore from the NNW, clean. That’s a serious, powerful wave for experienced surfers only. Beginners should stay on the sand.

Water temp is about 68°F, which is average for the time of year.

So the standout is Tuesday the 28th for that glassy, punchy east swell, and the absolute best bet is the morning of Sunday the 2nd of August – big, clean, offshore. That’s the one to circle on the calendar.

Rusty.
