The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Praia da Boraceia over the next couple of weeks. It's a bit of a slow burner, but there are a few windows that'll get the blood pumping.

It's a quiet start, to be honest. The first few days are pretty flat and uninspiring, with small, weak swell and mainly onshore or cross-off winds. Not worth paddling out for. The water's about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.

Our first real glimmer of hope comes on Saturday, August 8th. The morning is looking special. We've got a clean 4 ft S swell at 10 seconds, and the wind is glassy from the SSW. It's a beginner-friendly spot anyway, so that size is perfect. The combined energy is moderate (332), but the conditions are spot on. The afternoon sees the swell jump to 5 ft with a very long 15-second period, but that onshore wind from the SSE starts to mess with the surface. Still, the morning session is the pick of the early period.

The following week is a mixed bag. Sunday the 9th through to Tuesday the 11th sees the swell size holding around 4.5 ft to 6 ft, but we're plagued by light rain and cross-on or onshore winds. The wave energy gets strong, hitting over 1000 (1030) on Monday afternoon, but the quality is just marginal. The wind is just not our friend.

Wednesday, August 12th morning is a standout. The rain is light, but the wind goes glassy from the ESE. We've got a clean 4.3 ft S swell with a 12-second period, and the combined energy is solid (776). The description says "expect very good surf conditions," and I'm inclined to agree. That's a proper session.

Thursday, August 13th and Friday, August 14th mornings are also looking good. Thursday morning has that same glassy feel with a 4.6 ft S swell, and Friday morning is absolutely dead calm with a 4.6 ft SSE groundswell – the combined energy is pumping at 880. That Friday morning, with the glass-off and a nice long-period swell, is going to be clean and lined up. The crowds can be an issue here sometimes, but on a Friday morning you might get lucky.

After that, we fade back into smaller, less impressive surf until we hit the real gem of the whole forecast. Tuesday, August 18th morning is the one you want to circle. The swell pushes up to 7.9 ft from the S with an 11-second period, putting it in the strong wave energy bracket (1338). The wind is offshore from the N at just 3 mph. The report says "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers," and that's bang on. At 7.9 ft, this is for the crew who know what they're doing. It's a big, powerful, clean swell – the best on offer by a long shot. The following Friday morning, August 21st, also has a promising 6.9 ft ESE swell with a clean offshore wind, so that's another one to watch as we get closer.

Short Range Forecast

Light rain (total 3mm), mostly falling on Fri night. Warm (max 31°C on Thu morning, min 19°C on Fri night). Wind will be generally light.

Days 5-7 Weather Summary

Heavy rain (total 26mm), heaviest during Mon night. Warm (max 26°C on Sat night, min 16°C on Tue morning). Wind will be generally light.
