Ahoy there, fellow wave riders. Rusty here, and I've been staring at the charts for Praia da Boraceia. It's a bit of a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks, but there are a couple of sessions that have me properly excited. The water's sitting at about 70°F, which is pretty much what you'd expect for this time of year, so no surprises there.
First up, you're looking at a slow start. The beginning of July is pretty flat and not worth paddling out for. Friday the 3rd and into the next few days is just small, wonky stuff with cross-shore winds. You'll be waiting until early the next week for anything that might get you out of bed.
Alright, let’s get to it. The first real bright spot is Sunday morning, July 5th. It’s still small, around 5ft from the south, but the wind goes dead calm – glassy as it gets. Combined swell energy is moderate at 730, which is enough to push through on a longboard or a funboard. It'll be clean, but don't expect any barrels. The period is a solid 12 seconds, so you’ll get some proper groundswell lines with nice gaps between sets. This one’s for the soul surfer, not the hucker.
Keep that in mind for Monday morning, July 6th too. Another glassy morning, 4ft from the south (combined energy 532). It's the same story: small but clean.
Now, if you're feeling a bit more adventurous, keep your eyes on Thursday July 16th. This is the standout session. By the afternoon, we’ve got a proper pulse of swell rolling in. We're talking 6ft from the south (combined energy a solid 1037) – moderate-strong territory. The wind goes glassy in the afternoon, and that period stretches out to 12 seconds. This is proper groundswell, more energy, better shape. This one is for the experienced surfers only; that size at this break will be too much for beginners. Expect some solid, powerful sets. Then, Saturday July 18th is the other one to circle on your calendar. The afternoon looks incredible: 5ft from the SSE with a very long period of 16 seconds (combined energy jumps to a whopping 1368). That's a deep ocean swell, friends. Look for it to hold up well on the points and reefs, if there are any around. This is the pick of the entire outlook – excellent conditions, glassy wind, and a ton of water moving. Again, expert territory.
In between there are some other mornings (like July 11th, 12th, and 17th) with offshore winds and clean 3ft to 5ft swell, which will be fun for the intermediate crew, but nothing beats those two afternoons.
So, if you’ve got a quiver that handles bigger, cleaner lines, that Thursday the 16th and Saturday the 18th are your true standouts. Everything else is pretty average or small. Don't even bother with the first few days of the month.
That’s the call from here. Keep an eye on the sky.
Rusty.
