The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s shaping up for Praia da Boraceia. The next couple of weeks have a slow start, but there’s some real promise later on.

First up, we’ve got a bit of a wait. The real action doesn’t kick off until Saturday the 15th. Before that, it’s pretty flat. From the 15th, things start to get interesting.

Saturday morning the 15th brings in a solid SSE swell at 6 ft, with a 13-second period. The combined energy is pumping at 1120, that’s some serious power. Winds are light cross-off from the West at 6 mph, which should keep things reasonably clean for the bigger, more experienced crew. This is definitely for experienced surfers only at this size. Saturday afternoon, the wind swings onshore from the SE and the swell drops slightly, losing a bit of its shine.

Sunday the 16th sees a new, smaller swell filling in. Morning is glassy with an ESE swell at 5 ft, but the period is short at 8 seconds. It’s surfable, but not the best quality. The afternoon gets an onshore wind, so morning is the call for a paddle.

Monday the 17th looks like the pick of the first week. We’ve got clean, glassy conditions with a 7 ft E swell. The period is still short at 8 seconds, but the energy is strong (895). This one’s pushing the limits for beginners – over 8 ft is expert territory, so at 7 ft it’s more for the strong intermediate and above. That glassy wind will make for some fun, if a bit crumbly, walls.

After Monday, the surf tails off quickly. Tuesday through Friday sees small, weak swells with low energy (mostly under 200). The wind is okay but the waves are just too small to get excited about. There’s a real lull here for several days.

Now, looking further ahead into the second week, things get a bit more promising again. Sunday the 23rd of August is a standout morning. A new S swell arrives at 5 ft with a much longer 13-second period. The energy is solid at 737. Best of all, it’s glassy with calm winds. That’s your classic combo. It’s not huge, but the quality should be there with a clean surface.

Monday the 24th picks up to a bigger 7 ft SSE swell, but the onshore wind and rain make it a messy affair. The energy is huge at 1787 – that’s a lot of water moving – but the conditions look blown out. Save the gear.

Tuesday the 25th looks like another good option. Morning is glassy again, with a 5 ft S swell and a 13-second period. The energy is still high at 844. The afternoon holds up clean as well with a slight air. This one is a solid, clean groundswell option.

After that, the swell fades again through the end of the outlook, with small, ordinary waves that are tough to get excited about. The wind stays variable.

All up, the best bets for a clean session with decent swell look to be the morning of Sunday, August 23rd and the morning of Tuesday, August 25th. The Saturday the 15th is for the bigger wave chargers only. The rest of the window is mostly small or onshore.

This is Rusty, signing off.
