The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what Praia da Boraceia has in store over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, the first few days are pretty flat and messy. Early September 5th through the 6th, we’re looking at tiny, poor surf – just 1.3 ft of weak SSE swell with a short period, cross-on wind, and combined energy barely climbing above 90 (weak). Not worth paddling out. Water temp is sitting at 71.2°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year – about 2.7° above normal, so you might not need a thick wetsuit.

Things start to wake up a little from September 7th onward. Monday morning the 7th sees a jump to 6.6 ft from the S at 10 seconds, but it’s still cross-on and the energy is moderate (824). It’s marginal at best – not clean. The run of average conditions continues through Tuesday and Wednesday (8th and 9th), with waist-to-chest high SSE and ESE swells around 3.3 to 4.3 ft, period around 10 seconds. The best moment there is Tuesday morning when the wind drops to glass – dead calm – making for clean little waves. Combined energy is moderate (338). Still nothing to write home about.

Then we hit a lull. Thursday the 10th and Friday the 11th offer glassy mornings with small S swell (2.6 ft, 12-13 sec period, energy around 314-359) – surfable but pretty weak. By Friday afternoon the wind turns onshore and it’s poor again. Saturday and Sunday (12th and 13th) are tiny with clean but gutless 1.3 ft swell – energy down in the 70s and 80s. Not worth the drive.

Now here’s where it gets interesting. The real standouts come on Monday September 14th and Tuesday September 15th. Monday morning we get a solid 5.9 ft SSE groundswell at 13 seconds, glassy conditions, and combined energy of 1230 (strong). That’s excellent surf – but heads up, at this size it’s too big for beginners, and the break is rated for beginners, so it’s more for experienced crew. The afternoon gets bigger still – 8.2 ft from the SSE, but wind goes cross-on, making it chunky and only suitable for experts. Tuesday morning the 15th drops back to 4.3 ft from the S, again glassy, with 13-second period and energy at 1052 – absolutely beautiful conditions. That’s your best bet for a clean, solid session.

After that, the swell drops off. Wednesday the 16th is mixed, Thursday the 17th is poor with messy wind, but Friday and Saturday (18th and 19th) see some decent cleaner pulses. Friday morning offers 3.0 ft S swell at 14 seconds, glassy, energy 453 – clean but small. Saturday morning looks even better: 3.3 ft S swell, same
