The Lowdown

Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.

To be straight with you, it’s a pretty quiet run ahead. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak surf that’s mostly going to be a struggle. The only spot we’ve got to work with is Praia de Camburi, and it’s a sheltered, beginner-friendly break that needs a southerly direction to really light up. The forecast keeps throwing us east and southeast swells, which just don’t hit the spot here.

The first real chance to get wet kicks off on Sunday, August 2nd in the morning. We’ll see a little 4ft swell rolling in from the ESE with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate at 154. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the north, so conditions will be clean. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. The same goes for Monday, August 3rd, with a similar 4ft swell from the east, 8-second period, and moderate energy (162). The north-northeast cross-offshore breeze keeps it tidy. These are the only two days that even get a nod for being surfable, and even then, it’s very ordinary.

After that, the options dry up completely. We’re looking at a long gap of poor conditions from Tuesday, August 4th, all the way through to Wednesday, August 12th. The swell drops right off, and even though the winds are often offshore or cross-offshore, the waves are just too small and weak to bother with. The energy readings are mostly in the double digits, well under 100, which is a clear sign the ocean is flat.

Now, towards the end of the run, things get a little more interesting on Wednesday, August 12th in the morning. A 2ft swell from the SE with a long 13-second period arrives, and the offshore north-northeast wind makes it glassy clean. The energy is moderate at 182. It’s still on the small side, but that long period groundswell will give the waves a bit more shape. You’ll want to be on your longboard or a mid-length. Then on Friday, August 14th, both morning and afternoon, we see another 2ft swell from the SSE with a 14-second period, offshore winds, and energy readings of 181 and 167. These are the best two days of the whole outlook, but that’s not saying much. The water temperature is sitting at a pretty normal 74°, right on the mark for this time of year.

So, if you’re desperate, get on it Sunday, August 2nd, or Monday, August 3rd, but keep your expectations low. The real standout is the window on Wednesday, August 12th, and Friday, August 14th, when the longer period and clean offshore winds at least give you a chance to find a few lined-up, rideable waves, even if they’re only knee to waist high. It’s a quiet spell, but it won’t stay this way forever.

Rusty.
