The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the outlook for Praia de Camburi is a pretty tough one. We’re looking at a real dry spell. For a solid block of time from right now, through Tuesday the 18th of August and into the first week, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The waves are there, but the quality just isn't. We've got a long stretch of ‘poor surf conditions’ in the data that stretches out for over a week.
The first little glimmer of hope doesn’t show up until late in the window. Around Tuesday the 25th of August, things start to look a bit more interesting, but it's still going to be a challenge. The water temp is sitting at 73°F which is about average for this time of year.
Let’s break down the only real standout in this whole 16-day period, and it's a late one.
The Best Bet: Praia de Camburi (from Tuesday 25th August onward)
For Tuesday the 25th of August, and into Wednesday the 26th, the surf becomes *surfable*, but just barely. We've got a clean, cross-offshore breeze from the N and ESE, which is a major positive for getting some nice lines. The swell is coming from the SSE with a very long period of 14 seconds (and hitting 15 seconds on Wednesday afternoon). That’s proper groundswell energy, which will be working its magic. The wave heights are small, around 3 ft to 3 ft, and the combined wave energy is moderate, reading 369 on Tuesday morning.
The downside? With such a long period, this kind of SSE groundswell tends to break straight at a beach break like this. It might be better for a more experienced surfer who can work the peak, but beginners will find it tough. For the Wednesday afternoon session, the wind picks up to a fresh 19 mph offshore from the NE, which could cause a bit of chop despite being offshore. The day’s best chance is probably Tuesday the 25th with that slight cross-offshore breeze and glassy feel.
The Long Shot (Saturday 31st August)
Way out in the second week, on Saturday the 31st of August, we see a spike in the morning: an ENE offshore wind of 19 mph, but the swell is a short-period 4 ft from the S, combined with an energy reading of just 162. It's a short-period windswell, so the waves will be choppier and less powerful. Not the kind of quality you want to bet your morning on.
The Kite Surfing Alternative
Because the wind is so consistently strong and offshore through a lot of this period, especially with those fresh 19-22 mph breezes, and the surf quality is so poor for paddle surfing, the setup here looks way more interesting for kite surfing. If you've got a kite, you might have a ball. For the rest of us with a longboard, it's a waiting game.
In short, if you absolutely have to get wet, target the morning of Tuesday the 25th of August at Praia de Camburi. The rest of the window is a bust. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, this is a lean run.
Rusty, signing off.
