The Lowdown

G’day, it’s Rusty. Let’s break down what’s cookin’ at Praia de Camburi for the next couple weeks. I’ll be fair dinkum – it’s a slow start, and the real action doesn’t kick in until the second week.

The water’s runnin’ a touch cooler than normal, about 1° colder than average, so you’ll want an extra layer.

The first halfway decent window comes Friday 28 August morning. Clean conditions with a light north breeze, and a small 3ft swell from the SSE. The combined energy is weak (252), and it’s not the ideal direction for this spot, but it’s surfable. There’s a chance you’ll see a few others out.

After that, it goes dead quiet. From Friday afternoon straight through to Thursday 4 September, it’s mostly tiny waves and funky winds. You might get a small window on Saturday 5 September morning with clean conditions and a 2ft SSE swell at a nice 12-second period. The energy is still weak (143), but the long period will give it some shape. Not bad, but not a standout.

Sunday 6 September morning offers a 3ft easterly swell with a short 6-second period and light offshore winds. The energy is weak (120). Short period means the waves will be a bit soft and close together. Surfable, but ordinary.

Another lull hits from Monday 7 September through Wednesday 9 September morning – tiny, poor conditions.

Then we get the real gem. Wednesday 9 September afternoon. A 2ft swell from the ESE, but the period is a whoppin’ 17 seconds. That’s groundswell gold. The combined energy is moderate (335), and the wind is fresh offshore from the NE. Clean, glassy conditions. This is the best day of the whole outlook. For a sheltered spot like this, that long period will wrap in nicely, though it can break a bit straight on a beach setup. Expect a few other folks out.

Thursday 10 September keeps it going with a 4ft ESE swell, still long at 15 seconds, and fresh offshore NE winds. The energy is strong (557). Tide might be tricky, but the power’s there. This is a serious window for anyone who can read the water.

Friday 11 September sees a 6ft ESE swell, but the period drops to 8 seconds – more of a windswell. The energy is strong (519) and the offshore winds hold. That size is gettin’ up there for beginners, and the short period means the waves will be a bit sectiony. Still surfable, but Thursday is the cleaner pick.

Bottom line: Wednesday 9 September afternoon and Thursday 10 September are the standouts. That long period groundswell with offshore winds is your best bet. Don’t get your hopes up before that.

Rusty.
