The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk in feet and miles per hour for you crew who think that way. I’m Rusty, and here’s the story for Praia de Camburi.
This 16-day window is a real struggle for the first two weeks. The water temp is about 73°F, right around average for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze while you’re waiting for waves. But the surf? It’s flat, small, and messy for days.
From Sunday, August 30th, right through the first week, we’re looking at swell heights mostly under 0.7ft. The energy is weak, barely getting into the double digits. You’ll see offshore winds now and then, but with no swell, it’s just a pretty, empty ocean.
The first little bump is Tuesday morning, September 1st, with a 4ft east swell, but it’s short period at 8 seconds. The energy is moderate (205), but the conditions are still called poor. Not worth the paddle.
The rest of the first week is more of the same – small, short-period swells, with cross-on or onshore winds making it choppy. Thursday afternoon, September 3rd, we get “surfable but very ordinary” waves, which is the best we’ve seen, but that’s not saying much.
Then there’s a long gap from the 4th through the 13th of September. A few small pulses, but nothing to write home about. On the 10th, Thursday morning, we get a 4ft east swell, but it’s only 7 seconds. The energy is moderate (151), and the conditions are still only “surfable but very ordinary.” Not a standout.
Now, hold on to your board, because the real deal shows up on Monday, September 14th. Swell hits 8ft from the ESE with a 9-second period, and the energy is strong at 1503. The wind is a gentle offshore from the NE in the morning, then goes glassy in the afternoon. That’s clean, good surf. This is the standout. At 8ft, this is for experts only. Beginners, stay on the beach.
Tuesday, September 15th, looks similar with a 8ft ESE swell and glassy conditions in the afternoon. Energy is still strong at 1288. Again, for the experienced crew. But it’s a long way out, so keep your eyes on the forecast.
So, it’s a long, flat wait for the first two weeks, but the 14th and 15th of September are the payoff. Big, clean, and for experts. Stay safe out there.
