The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let me break down what we’ve got coming up for Praia de Camburi over the next couple of weeks. It’s a pretty lean stretch for surf, so I’ll level with you right now.
First off, the water temp is sitting at about 74°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no nasty surprises on that front. Good.
Now, for the bad news. We go from Monday the 27th of July right through to the 11th of August and honestly, there isn’t a single decent wave on the table. It’s a fourteen-day dry spell, more or less. The wave heights barely tickle the knee at 1 ft to 3 ft most days, with the combined energy stuck down in the dumper – often between 14 and 125 (that 125 is the rare "moderate" energy moment, but it ain’t making anything rideable). The swell direction is swinging around from SSE to ESE, which isn't even optimal for this spot. This break is sheltered, and it needs a southerly swell to really wake up.
The wind does a nice job of being offshore or cross-offshore from the NE or N most mornings and afternoons – that would normally mean clean, glassy lines. But with no push in the swell, it’s like having a perfectly waxed board and no waves. A few sessions show that classic "fresh offshore and clean" or "glassy" conditions, like Saturday the 1st of August morning with a glassy wind, but the swell is a measly 2 ft with a 6-second period. Too weak. On the 5th of August morning, we see a tiny bump to 3 ft from the east with a 7-second period and clean conditions, but the energy is still weak at 112. It’s just not enough.
The longer-period swells (11 to 13 seconds) pop up on the 8th and 9th of August afternoons, but the height is 1 ft to 2 ft, and those are more likely to just make the ocean look restless than actually break. For a beach setup like Praia de Camburi, those long-period groundswells need more size to be any fun.
Since we’re looking at a beach break with minimal swell, it’d be more interesting for the kite crew than us paddle surfers. There’s just nothing that will give you a proper ride. The forecast can always change, so keep an eye on it, but for now, leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
