The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what we’ve got for this stretch of coast.
First up, the water temp is about 72°, which is pretty much bang on normal for this time of year. No weird anomalies to worry about.
Now, to be straight with you, the next week is pretty grim. We’ve got a few days of rubbish onshore winds and tiny, weak swells. Saturday the 22nd has a short-period 4ft S swell, but it’s getting thumped by a 19 mph cross-onshore wind, making it a lumpy mess. That drops off fast into Sunday and Monday with swells barely 1ft and virtually no energy – not worth paddling out for.
Things start to look a bit better by Tuesday the 25th. That morning, we see a glassy, calm start with a 3ft SSE groundswell. The period is a long 14 seconds, which suggests better-shaped waves. The combined energy is moderate (360). It’s still small, but with no wind, it’ll be clean. That’s your first real window for a sneaky session if you’re desperate.
The standout period hits on Wednesday the 26th. We get a solid 4ft SSE swell with a very long 17-second period. That’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is strong (788) and the wind goes offshore from the NE in the afternoon at 12 mph. This is clean, powerful surf. Remember, with that long period, it might be a bit straight at the beach, but if you can find a bank or a corner, you’ll be in for some proper waves. Thursday the 27th is similar, though the swell drops a touch, and the wind stays offshore from the NE. That Wednesday and Thursday are the best on offer.
After that, it fades fast. By Friday the 28th, the swell is back down to under 2ft and even with offshore winds, there’s just no juice. The week after that is almost flat, with a few days of zero energy, and a few tiny pulses of 0.3ft to 2ft that aren't worth mentioning.
Looking into the first week of September, there’s another pulse of energy around the 3rd and 5th, with 6ft and 6ft SSE swells. But the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, making it choppy. The period is a short 7 seconds, so the energy (614, 633) is there, but it’s messy and ugly. That kind of setup would be more interesting for the kite crew than the paddle crew.
So, bottom line: the best window is Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th of August. It’s not huge, but with that long-period groundswell and offshore wind, it’ll be the cleanest and most powerful surf in this whole 16-day outlook.
Rusty.
