The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for our stretch of coast.
Alright mate, it’s a bit of a slow start and a long wait for anything decent. The first week and a half is pretty flat or just plain messy. We’re looking at a solid gap of poor conditions until things start to show a glimmer of promise around the 3rd of September.
Praia de Camburi is the only spot on the menu, and for the first week, it’s not doing us any favours. The water is sitting at 71°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit. The first real sign of life comes on Monday, 25 August morning. The wind is glassy, and the swell is a clean 3ft from the SSE. It’s not big, but it’s clean. The combined energy is moderate at 345, and the period is a long 14 seconds, which means good shape but with long lulls. This is a sheltered spot, and the direction is right for the SSE swell. It’s a beginner-friendly break, and with crowds possible, it’s a good one for a quiet session. The Tuesday afternoon looks okay too, with a moderate offshore from the ENE at 12 mph keeping it clean.
The real standout, though, is the Thursday afternoon of the 27th of August. Swell is solid at 4ft from the SSE, with a very long period of 15 seconds. The combined energy is strong (568), and the wind is a clean offshore from the ENE at 16 mph. That’s a recipe for some proper lined-up waves. It’s a bit much for beginners at that size, but for the intermediate crew, this is the best window. The long period does mean the waves will be more powerful and better shaped, but it can also make the sets a bit unpredictable for a beach break setup.
After that, it drops off again. The 28th and 29th are small and blown out, and it goes nearly flat for a few days.
Then, we get a bit of a revival on Thursday, 3 September. The morning is glassy with a 2ft SSE swell and a long period of 14 seconds. The energy is moderate (341). It’s small but clean. The afternoon gets better with a 4ft swell from the ESE, but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit weak and choppy. Still, it’s the best of a sketchy forecast.
Friday, 5 September is also worth a mention. The morning sees a 2ft swell from the east, with a light cross-offshore breeze. It’s clean, but the period is short (8 seconds), so it’s a bit of a junky wave. The combined energy is weak (140). It’s a surfable, ordinary day.
Overall, the pick of the entire 16 days is the Thursday afternoon, 27 August at Praia de Camburi. That’s the one you circle on the calendar. It’s a promising window, but being a week out, keep an eye on it. The rest is a lot of waiting.
Rusty.
