The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.

To be straight with you, the surf forecast for Praia de Camburi is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, weak conditions. The swell energy is very low, and the waves are just not coming together with decent weather. The water temp is sitting at 23°, right on the money for the time of year, so nothing surprising there.

We start Friday morning, July 24, with a tiny 3 ft swell from the east, but it’s messy and cross-on. The combined energy is a weak 99, and the period is a short 8 seconds. It’s poor. That pretty much sets the tone for the next several days. The swell is small, often under 3 ft, and the wind is either cross-on or just not making it clean. Saturday morning, July 25, has a 2 ft wave from the east with a 7-second period, and the wind is offshore from the NNE, at least, so it’s clean. But the energy is only 80, and it’s still a tiny wave. Not worth getting excited about.

The end of July and start of August are a real lull. We go through a series of days with swell heights dropping to 0.3 ft or 0.7 ft, and the combined energy falls into the single digits or low teens. The wind is offshore or cross-off, so it’s glassy or clean, but there’s simply no wave to ride. This is a dead stretch for surfing.

The combined energy climbs back up around 132 on Sunday, July 26, but the swell is still small and the wind is cross-on, making it choppy. Not a good look.

Finally, we get a little flicker of hope on Monday, August 4. The morning shows a 3 ft wave from the east with some energy coming through (163 combined), and the wind is cross-off from the north. It’s clean, but it’s still just a knee-high wave. Tuesday afternoon, August 5, sees a similar story: 3 ft from the east, offshore wind from the ENE, and a moderate 131 combined energy. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s a bit weak. But it’s clean.

The best we see is on Thursday, August 6, into the following week. The morning of August 6 is glassy with a 3 ft wave from the east, and the combined energy hits 151. The afternoon gets a 2 ft wave from the southeast with a 10-second period, and the energy is the strongest we’ve seen at 180. The wind is light offshore, so it’s clean. For this spot, that’s the standout. It’s not a big wave, but it’s the most consistent and cleanest pulse of the whole forecast.

For the rest of the second week, expect small, clean, offshore winds, but the swell stays below 3 ft. The energy stays low, in the 60-80 range. It’s a long, drawn-out period of small surf. The calm conditions are good for a beginner looking for a gentle, clean session, but there’s nothing with any power or size for a seasoned surfer.

Rusty.
