The Lowdown

Right, mate, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the outlook for Praia de Camburi over the next 16 days is a real mixed bag. We’re looking at a long, quiet stretch before a final few days that might just wake up.

For the first week and a half, it’s pretty flat. From Sunday the 26th of July all the way through to Wednesday the 5th of August, the surf is tiny and weak. You’re looking at swell heights bumping along between 0.7 ft and 2 ft, and the combined wave energy is barely a whisper, mostly double-digit numbers like 30 or 50 (weak energy). The wind does offer some clean windows – there are some glassy mornings and offshore breezes – but there’s just not enough swell to push anything rideable. It’s a real bummer.

Then things change. Thursday the 6th of August is the first real standout. The morning brings a clean, glassy pulse with a 2 ft swell from the S, with a long period of 13 seconds. The energy jumps to 462 (moderate wave energy), which is a massive step up. The water temp is sitting at 73°F, which is about average for this time of year. This is a sheltered spot, so a long-period groundswell like this will work nicely. It’s a beginner-friendly break, so the 2 ft size is perfect for learning, but the crowds are sometimes around, so don’t expect it all to yourself.

Friday the 7th of August builds on that. The swell pushes to 4 ft from the SSE, with a 14-second period and the wind is fresh offshore in the afternoon. The energy is a solid 508 (moderate wave energy). That’s a proper little groundswell. Saturday the 8th of August looks like the best of the bunch. The swell hits 5 ft from the SE, with a 13-second period, and the afternoon is clean with a moderate offshore wind. The energy is strong at 846 (moderate to strong wave energy). This is getting a bit punchy for beginners, but for the experienced crew, it’s the top pick.

Sunday the 9th of August holds a solid 5 ft swell from the SE, with clean offshore winds in the afternoon. The energy is 613 (moderate wave energy). After that, the swell starts to fade again through the 10th. So, the game is to wait until that first week of August is done, then get ready for a busy Thursday through Sunday.

Rusty out.
