The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, checkin’ in from the coast. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with you – it’s a quiet start. There’s not much to get excited about for the first few days. The surf is tiny, and while the winds are clean, the swell just isn’t there. The first real chance of anything worth paddling out for is on Sunday the 9th of August, but even then it’s small, with a little 1ft SE swell and a long 15-second period. The energy is weak (82), so it’s more of a longboard session if you’re keen.
Monday the 10th of August gives us a moment of pure glass in the morning – wind is dead calm, and the water is flat as a pancake. The swell is still only 1ft from the SSE, with moderate energy (79). It’s pretty, but not really surfable.
Things start to get a bit more interesting mid-week. On Tuesday the 11th of August, the swell picks up to 2ft from the SE, and the energy jumps to 382 (moderate). But the wind is cross-onshore and it’s raining, so it’s messy. Not worth the drive.
The best bet in this whole 16-day window lands on Thursday the 14th of August. Praia de Camburi sees a 3ft SSE groundswell with a very long 16-second period, pushing the energy up to 541 (strong). The wind is a clean offshore from the NE, so the waves will be peeling nicely. Keep in mind, with a period that long, it’s going to be a bit more suited to the points and reefs – it might break a little too straight if you’re at a beach break. But for a sheltered spot like this, it’s the standout. Water temp is sitting at 74°, which is pretty much average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
After that, the swell drops off again. Friday the 15th and Saturday the 16th are small and choppy. Sunday the 16th has a glassy morning with 2ft E swell, but the energy is weak (131). It’s surfable, but nothing special.
The second week gets a bit bumpy. Monday the 17th of August has a 3ft SE swell, but the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s junky and weak (117). Tuesday the 18th of August has the biggest swell of the period at 5ft from the E, but again, a short 6-second period means it’s disorganised, and the wind is fresh. The energy is 354 (moderate), but it’s not going to be pretty. This one’s for the experts only, and even then, it’s a gamble.
The rest of the week is small and clean but weak. Friday the 21st of August has another pulse of 3ft to 3ft SSE swell with a 14-second period and energy around 334 (moderate), but the wind is blowing offshore, so it could be a decent session if you’re after a long, clean ride.
Overall, the best wave of the lot is definitely Thursday the 14th of August – that’s the one to circle on the calendar. Everything else is pretty small or wind-affected. Keep your expectations in check, and you might snag a few fun ones.
Rusty.
