The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, your local surf reporter. Let's break down what's on the menu for Praia de Camburi over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a flat spell. The coming days are looking pretty ordinary, with small, messy waves and not much to get excited about. However, don't write it off completely. The pattern is set to change, and we've got a promising run of surf building towards the end of the month.
For the first week, from Friday afternoon (July 17th) through to Wednesday morning (July 22nd), we're dealing with small, inconsistent swell. The waves will be there, but they're nothing special. Friday afternoon sees a 4ft swell from the ESE with a moderate offshore breeze, but the energy is weak (325). Saturday morning (July 18th) is a write-off with poor surf and a light cross-shore. We see a few cleaner windows, like Sunday morning (July 19th) with a 4ft easterly swell and a light cross-offshore breeze, but it's still just 'surfable' at best. The water temp is sitting at 74°, which is about average for this time of year.
Then we hit a real lull. From Wednesday afternoon (July 22nd) through to Monday morning (July 27th), it’s almost flat. The swell drops to 0.3ft and 0.7ft with long periods from the south, but the energy is negligible. There are a few glassy mornings, like Thursday (July 23rd) and Sunday (July 26th), but there's simply no swell to ride. That's a solid 5-day gap with no worthwhile surf.
Now, the good news. The outlook starts to look up from Tuesday, July 28th. The swell picks up, and we get a long-period groundswell from the SSE. Tuesday morning (July 28th) shows a 1ft SSE swell with a 15-second period, which is a sign of things to come. The energy jumps to 137, and it's clean with a light cross-offshore breeze. The standout period, however, is the last few days of July and into August.
The absolute best on offer is Friday, July 31st, and Saturday, August 1st. On Friday afternoon, we get a solid 5ft swell from the SE, with a 10-second period and a clean, light cross-offshore breeze. The combined energy is a strong 469. Saturday morning (August 1st) is even better, with the same 5ft SE swell, but the energy is cranking at 632, and it's glassy clean with a light cross-offshore breeze. This is the real deal – a moderate, clean swell that will be perfect for all levels. The waves will be fun and punchy, and the crowds might be around, but with waves this good, it's worth the company.
The swell direction is from the SE, which is a bit off the optimum S direction for this sheltered spot, but the size and quality of the swell should still make it work. This is your window. Get out there.
That's the story from me. Keep an eye on the long-range for Saturday, it's looking promising but, as always, a week out, things can change.
Rusty.
