The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this 16-day window for Praia de Camburi is a tough one for us surfers. The forecast is a long, flat spell with very little to get excited about. There’s a gap of no real surf recommendations from the start all the way through to the end of the first week and into the second. The first few days offer some small, weak waves, but the conditions are just too ordinary to bother with. We’re looking at a lot of poor surf and marginal calls, so don’t rush out.
The first potential window of interest is on Sunday, August 11th, but even then, it’s a tough sell. The morning brings a 3ft swell from the south at a short 5 seconds, with a cross-off breeze from the north at 12 mph. The combined energy of all swells is weak at 84 (moderate wave energy), but the wave comment says it’s poor surf conditions. The afternoon is worse with a 2ft easterly swell and a fresh offshore wind from the northeast at 22 mph, but again, poor surf. This spot is sheltered and only fairly consistent, so it’s not a surprise.
The only real standout, if you can call it that, comes on Friday, August 15th in the afternoon. We see a 4ft swell from the SSE with a very long period of 12 seconds, which is a proper groundswell. The combined energy jumps to 929 (strong wave energy), which is the biggest number in the whole forecast. The wind is fresh offshore from the NE at 22 mph, which should offer clean waves. The caveat is that this is a beach break, and a long period swell like this can be prone to breaking too straight, but the offshore wind should help. The wave comment is still “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions”, so it’s not a guaranteed winner, but it’s the best on offer. The water temperature is 73°, which is about average for the time of year.
Forget the rest of the period. There’s a small 6ft sou’easterly on Thursday the 13th, but with a short 6-second period and a fresh offshore, it’s still a poor surf call. The 15th morning has a 3ft swell from the SSE with a very long 13-second period, but the energy is lower (310) and the comment is poor. Nothing else is worth a paddle.
Look, it’s a quiet run for Praia de Camburi. The swell is small, the period is often short, and the conditions are rarely lining up. Keep an eye on that Friday the 15th afternoon, but don’t hold your breath. It’s not a great time to be a surfer here.
Rusty.
