The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s shaking for the next couple of weeks at Praia de Camburi.
To be straight with you, it’s a pretty flat and frustrating stretch ahead. The whole 16-day window is a grind with barely anything worth paddling out for. Most days you’re looking at tiny weak surf, with the combined swell energy mostly stuck in the low double or triple digits, peaking at a modest 266 by the end. The good news is the water temp is sitting around 73°, which is bang on normal for this time of year, so at least it won’t feel weird.
The first week is a write-off. From Wednesday the 29th of July through to around Wednesday the 5th of August, the swell is tiny – we’re talking 0.7ft to 1ft, short-period junk most of the time. There’s a small pulse on the 4th and 5th with waist-high 3ft east swell, and the combined energy hits 221 on the 4th afternoon, but the report still calls it “poor surf conditions.” That says it all. At least the wind is offshore or clean through that stretch, but there’s just no wave to work with.
Then we hit a proper lull from the 6th of August through to the 12th of August. Swell drops back to 0.3ft to 2ft, mostly from the south or southeast. Some glassy mornings and clean afternoons, but the energy is weak (29 to 155 combined). The afternoon of the 9th has a little pulse of 2ft southeast groundswell with a period of 14 seconds, but still “poor surf conditions.” It’s just not cooperating.
Finally, on Thursday the 13th of August morning and into Thursday afternoon, things get interesting – as interesting as it gets. A southeast groundswell builds to 3ft–3ft with a 13–14 second period, and the combined energy jumps to 255 and then 266. That’s moderate energy, real groundswell. The wind goes glassy in the morning and light offshore in the afternoon, so it should be clean. It’s the only time in the whole forecast where the system says “surfable waves.” For this break, that’s the standout – but it’s still only knee-to-waist high, so lower your expectations. The southeast direction is not ideal for this sheltered spot (optimum is from the south), so the shape might be a bit soft.
Overall, there’s really only one day worth checking: Thursday the 13th of August. The rest is a desert. Sometimes that’s just how it goes here.
