The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Prainha over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we're looking at a bit of a mixed bag. The opening days are actually pretty tidy, but there's a long, quiet stretch coming up that you'll want to be aware of. The real standout action is right at the start and then again much later in the forecast.
We kick off on Wednesday, July 15th, with a solid window. Morning is looking prime at Prainha with a clean 3.3 ft swell rolling in from the ESE. The wind is glassy, dead calm from the NNW at only 3 mph. That’s going to be a beautiful morning session, no doubt about it. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so the wetsuit you’ve been using should be fine. The wave energy is moderate, sitting at 204, which should give you plenty of push. The afternoon is a write-off, though, with that NE wind swinging onshore and spoiling it.
Thursday the 16th is a carbon copy of the morning session. Another glassy start with a WSW wind at 3 mph, keeping the 3.3 ft E swell clean as a whistle. The energy is similar at 212. Get in the water early. The afternoon, again, the NE wind chops it up.
Friday the 17th is a bit of a step down. The morning has a 3.0 ft E swell, but the period is a short 8 seconds, so the waves will be a bit weaker and a bit more gutless. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the W at 3 mph, so it’s still surfable, just nothing to write home about. The energy is down to 142.
Now, here’s where it gets quiet. From Saturday the 18th all the way through to Saturday the 26th of July, the conditions are mostly poor. The wind is generally onshore or cross-shore, the swell stays small and weak, and the wave energy drops into the double digits or low hundreds. There are a few mornings with glassy conditions, like Sunday the 19th and Tuesday the 21st, but the swell is tiny and weak. It's a long stretch of flat to ordinary conditions, so don't be surprised if you're staring at a lake.
The light at the end of the tunnel is Sunday, July 26th. The afternoon session looks like a proper wildcard. We’ve got a 3.9 ft swell from the SE, which is a bit of a different angle, and the period is a short 7 seconds. The energy, however, jumps up to 268, which is a decent thump. The wind is a clean, cross-offshore breeze from the S at 9 mph. The morning of the 26th is still small, but the afternoon is the first real chance for a decent session in over a week. It’s not the best quality swell, but it’s the best we’ve got in that second week.
The very end of the run on Wednesday, July 30th, has a glassy morning with a 3.9 ft E swell and 195 energy. It’s surfable, but a bit ordinary. For a real standout, the clear winner is that Wednesday morning, July 15th. It’s the first day, it’s consistent, glassy, and the waves are a clean 3.3 ft. That’s your best bet. The Sunday afternoon, July 26th, is the only other real highlight to look forward to if you’re desperate for a paddle.
Stay salty.
