The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got a solid block of action coming up at Prainha, starting Tuesday morning, 14 July, and it’s a long run of mostly clean, small-to-medium surf. The water temperature is sitting pretty average for the time of year, nothing weird to report there.
The overall pattern is a slow-burner. We kick off Tuesday morning, 14 July, with a clean 3ft swell out of the SE, period around 10 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate (200). The wind is a light cross-off from the SSW, so the lineup will be tidy. It’s not a big day, but it’s a nice start. By Tuesday afternoon, the wind swings onshore and the quality drops off, so hit the dawn patrol.
The standout runs are Wednesday morning, 15 July, and Thursday morning, 16 July. Wednesday brings a slightly bigger 4ft ESE swell, period 10 seconds, and the combined energy lifts to 223. The wind is glassy, dead NW at 3 mph, making for a mirror-smooth surface. This is the best of the first week. Thursday morning, 16 July, is nearly identical – 3ft E swell, 10-second period, combined energy 212, and the wind is glassy again from the W. Both mornings are the pick of the bunch for clean, fun waves.
Friday morning, 17 July, is still surfable with 3ft E swell, but the period drops to 8 seconds (short period, so less push), and the energy is 161. Winds are glassy again, so it’s clean but ordinary. Saturday morning, 18 July, sees a cross-shore wind, and the surf quality goes poor. Sunday morning, 19 July, is glassy again but only 3ft, and the energy has dropped to 145. After that, there’s a gap of a few days from Sunday afternoon through to Tuesday, 21 July, where conditions are either poor or only ordinary.
Wednesday, 22 July, stays ordinary with small 2ft to 4ft surf and light rain, but it’s clean because of a cross-off wind. Then, on Thursday, 23 July, we get a little spike: 5ft SE swell in the morning, period 8 seconds, combined energy jumps to 355. The wind is cross-off from the SW at 9 mph, so it’s clean. That’s the biggest swell of the whole forecast, but it’s over 5ft, so it’s edging into expert territory for Prainha. The afternoon holds well with 4ft and energy 277. This is the other standout.
From Friday, 24 July, onward, it’s a slow fade. Friday morning is glassy but only 2ft, energy 45. Saturday and Sunday mornings, 25-26 July, are glassy calm with 3ft to 4ft, but the waves are ordinary, and the energy is low. The last decent morning is Monday, 27 July, with 3ft E swell, 8-second period, and energy 153, glassy wind. After that, Tuesday, 28 July, is a small 2ft with a glassy start, but the afternoon gets howling SSE wind at 16 mph, messy. Wednesday, 29 July, finishes with a clean 2ft and light offshore wind, but it’s barely a ripple.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is Wednesday morning, 15 July, and Thursday morning, 23 July. Wednesday is the cleaner, smaller, more consistent session with glassy conditions and 4ft ESE swell. Thursday the 23rd has the biggest swell at 5ft from the SE, but it’s for the experienced crew. Prainha is an advanced break, and it’s very consistent, which is good – it’s not a spot that goes dead for long. Crowds are sometimes an issue, so get there early for the good ones.
Rusty.
