The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next 16 days for Prainha.
Water temp is sitting at 64°F right now, which is about 2°F cooler than normal for this time of year. Nothing crazy, just a little on the cool side.
We start proper on Monday, July 13th. The weekend before is dead, so don’t bother. Monday morning is the real standout. We’ve got a solid 6ft SSE swell rolling in with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is a solid moderate 620. Wind is a cross-off from the SSW at 9 mph, keeping things clean. This is the best wave of the whole run for advanced surfers. The swell direction is SSE, a little south of the optimum S, but it’s still working well. Expect very good surf conditions. Crowds are “sometimes” here, so you might have company, but the quality will be worth it.
Monday afternoon drops off quick. The swell dips to 5ft, period drops to 8 seconds, and the wind goes cross-shore from the SE. Conditions get messy. Forget it.
Tuesday, July 14th, morning brings a smaller 3ft SE swell with a 10-second period and combined energy of 201. Wind is light and cross-off from the SW at 6 mph. It’s clean, but the size is modest. Not a standout, but a solid session if you’re keen. The afternoon is marginal with a light cross-onshore.
Wednesday, July 15th, morning is glassy. Wind is from the west at 3 mph, dead calm. Swell is 4ft from the ESE at 10 seconds, energy 240. It’s clean, but again, not massive. Thursday morning, July 16th, repeats the formula: glassy, 3ft E swell, 10 seconds, energy 216. Both mornings are nice, clean, small-wave fun.
Friday, July 17th, morning is glassy but only 3ft of 8-second E swell. It’s ordinary. Saturday, July 18th, through to Sunday, July 26th, is mostly a blank stretch. There are a few mornings with small, clean conditions—like the 21st and 22nd—but nothing that really gets the heart pumping. The 21st Tuesday morning has 3ft E swell at 8 seconds with a cross-off wind, but it’s tiny. The 22nd Wednesday morning is similar. Overall, this is a long, quiet patch.
Then, on Monday, July 27th, the swell wakes up. Morning brings a 4ft ESE groundswell with a very long 14-second period, and the combined energy jumps to a strong 496. Wind is glassy from the NNW at 3 mph. This is a proper event. The long period means the waves will have real shape and power, and the glassy wind will make it look like a lake. It’s a Monday, so crowds might be a little thinner. This is the second standout of the outlook, but it’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on the forecasts.
Tuesday, July 28th, morning is also glassy, with 3ft ESE swell at 11 seconds and energy of 201. The afternoon stays clean with a light cross-off. It’s not the big one, but a very nice way to finish the period.
So, the two best windows are Monday July 13th morning and Monday July 27th morning. The 13th is the bigger, punchier option. The 27th is the longer-period, more powerful groundswell with perfect conditions. Everything else is small, clean, or just average. If you’re after a paddle, pick your moment in the first week or wait for that last Monday.
Rusty.
