The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s happening at Prainha.
Right now, it’s a slow start, but things get moving. The water is at 64°F, which is a bit cooler than usual for this time of year—nothing wild, but you’ll want a thick wetsuit.
The first real surf kicks off Tuesday morning, 14 July. Prainha is showing a clean 3ft swell from the SE with a 10-second period, and moderate energy running at 200. The wind is light and cross-off from the SSW at 3 mph, so the face will be clean. This is a good window for advanced surfers only. It’s an exposed spot, so it catches whatever’s out there, but the direction isn’t a perfect match for its optimum S swell, so expect a bit of a wrap. The crowd can show up sometimes, but it’s not a circus.
Wednesday morning, 15 July, is the real standout. The swell nudges up to 4ft from the ESE, still 10 seconds, and the energy is a bit stronger at 223. The wind goes glassy—NNW at 3 mph. That’s as clean as it gets. The waves will be smooth and lined up. This is the best session early on.
Thursday morning, 16 July, keeps the run going with another glassy morning, this time from the W at 3 mph. The swell holds at 3ft from the E, period of 10 seconds, energy at 212. Clean and fun.
Friday morning, 17 July, the swell period drops to 8 seconds, which is a bit shorter and weaker, but the swell is still 3ft to 3ft. The wind is glassy again from the W at 3 mph. The conditions are clean, but the waves will be more ordinary—still surfable, just not as good.
The weekend and the start of the following week get a bit messy. Saturday and Sunday mornings have glassy wind, but the swell is weak and short-period, with energy dropping. Sunday afternoon (19 July) and Monday afternoon (20 July) have no recorded swell. It’s a lull.
Then, on Sunday morning, 26 July, the swell starts to build—5ft from the SE at 10 seconds, and the energy is big at 406. The wind is light and cross from the NNW, so there’s some texture but it’s still rideable. The real standout is the following Monday morning, 27 July. That’s the one to watch. Swell holds at 4ft, but the period stretches to 14 seconds—proper groundswell—and the energy is massive at 525. The wind is glassy from the NNW. This is a long-period swell, and at a beach break, it might break a bit straight, but for a clean, powerful wave, it’s the best of the whole outlook. Keep in mind, this is more than a week away, so it’s promising but not a sure thing.
After that, Tuesday and Wednesday (28–29 July) have some cross-shore breeze and a bit of rain, but the swell is still 4ft to 4ft with long periods (13–14 seconds). The energy is still high (452–542), but the wind is not as clean.
Overall, the best two windows are Wednesday morning, 15 July, for the glassy, clean conditions, and Monday morning, 27 July, for the big, long-period groundswell with glassy wind. Don’t miss those.
Rusty.
