The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, breaking it down in feet for those who think in yards.
Don't get too excited for the first few days. Saturday the 18th is a total dud with ankle-biters and a messy cross-on breeze. Sunday the 19th shows a bit of waist-high potential but the period is short and the wind is all over the shop. You’re not surfing anything decent until Monday the 20th morning.
That morning, Monday the 20th, is the real standout. The wind goes glassy – dead flat calm, perfect. The swell is a clean 3ft from the east with a short 8-second period, but combined wave energy is moderate (130). For an advanced wave like Prainha, that glassy, clean surface will make the small stuff feel a lot more fun.
Then it settles into a long run of small conditions. Tuesday the 21st morning has about 3ft from the east with light offshore wind (WSW), giving you clean lines. Wednesday the 22nd, Thursday the 23rd, and Friday the 24th all offer small, ordinary surf – mostly under 3ft with cross-off winds keeping them rideable. Water temp is around 64°F, about average for the season.
There’s a real dead stretch mid-period. Saturday the 26th morning is glassy and small at 2ft, but by the afternoon the wind turns onshore and messes it up. Sunday the 27th through Tuesday the 29th mornings are mostly poor – weak, short-period junk and onshore/cross-onshore winds. That’s a solid four-day gap with nothing worth chasing.
Coming into the second week, Wednesday the 29th of July morning brings another brief highlight. Glassy conditions again with a clean 3ft east swell and moderate energy (119). It’s not big, but with zero wind, every wave will be a clean little open face.
From Thursday the 30th through Sunday the 2nd of August, it’s a long run of ankle-to-waist high surf with mostly clean conditions. Swell stays from the east and while it’s small, the consistency is there. You won’t be getting barreled, but you won’t be totally skunked either.
Best bet: Monday the 20th morning for that glassy start and a solid 3ft. Wednesday the 29th morning is the other call – also glassy, a little smaller, but still worth the session.
Rusty.
